DIGITAL BANKING

After nearly six years steering Monzo from turbulence to profitability, CEO TS Anil is stepping down to make way for former Google executive Diana Layfield in a move that positions the neobank for its anticipated 2026 IPO. When TS Anil took the helm at Monzo in May 2020, the UK’ s most recognisable neobank was struggling to reach profitability.

The pandemic had shaved 40 % off its valuation, accountants were raising“ going concern” warnings, and losses exceeded £ 115m( US $ 151m).
Fast forward to today, and the veteran banker has orchestrated one of fintech’ s most remarkable turnarounds, transforming a cash-burning startup into a profitable digital banking powerhouse serving one in five UK adults.
Now, as Monzo prepares for a blockbuster stock market flotation potentially valuing the company at £ 10bn( US $ 13.1bn), he has announced his departure to make room for Diana Layfield, who will take over as Group CEO in February 2026, subject to regulatory approval.
From red ink to record profits The scale of Anil’ s achievement becomes clear in the numbers: under his leadership, Monzo’ s customer base exploded from four million to over 13 million users, while revenue soared from £ 67m( US $ 88m) to more than £ 1.2bn( US $ 1.57bn). The neobank posted its first annual profit of £ 15.4m( US $ 20.2m) for the year ending March 2024,

a dramatic reversal from the £ 116m( US $ 152m) loss recorded the previous year. But the turnaround wasn’ t just about the bottom line. Anil quadrupled the workforce from 1,000 to 4,000 employees, creating one of Britain’ s fastest-growing tech employers whilst maintaining the innovative culture that made Monzo a household name.
The transformation required both discipline and vision. Anil brought nearly three decades of experience from financial giants, including Visa, Standard Chartered and Citigroup – exactly the pedigree needed to mature a challenger bank without losing its disruptive edge.
His approach centred on solving customer anxieties around money through technology and accessibility, regardless of wealth or age.
Building a banking ecosystem Under Anil’ s watch, Monzo evolved from a simple current account into a comprehensive financial services platform.
