In this month ’ s edition of FinTech Magazine , we have two features examining the potential impact of the metaverse on financial services . First , we ask whether this new technology could offer banks an exciting new frontier . Then , we look at the rise of non-fungible tokens ( NFTs ), which to date have been mainly traded as digital artworks but could represent a lucrative new revenue stream for the global video game industry .
Working in fintech every day , we are often guilty of being blind-sided by new technologies and losing sight of the broader perspective . There are roughly 1.5bn unbanked and underbanked people in the world today , largely in rural communities or developing countries . We ask what more can be done to engage those underserved populations in the financial system . It ’ s an important topic – what hope do we have of driving uptake in new technologies , like the metaverse , when so many people still lack access to a bank account ?
