SUSTAINABILITY

A

t London Climate Action Week, finance and insurance execs shone a spotlight on a question that is becoming harder to avoid across banking, insurance and asset management: what does credible climate action look like now, when the transition is being tested by political backlash, shifting regulation and uneven market behaviour?
An Honest Conversation on Advancing Climate Action in the Finance Industry brought together Allianz Board Member Günther Thallinger, BNP Paribas’ Chief Sustainability Officer Laurence Pessez, and Heffa Schücking, Founder and Director of Urgewald – with journalist Hugh Wheelan moderating – setting a tone that was less about abstract ambition than operational reality.
Focusing in on how climate strategy in finance has moved well beyond the era of broad commitments and polished positioning, the session emphasised how that, for banks and insurers, the harder question now is not whether to act, but how to make sustainability part of the business model in a way that is durable, profitable and credible under pressure. The discussion cut straight to the commercial realities facing financial institutions that want to move capital away from fossil fuels while still competing in demanding markets – showing that climate action is more than a matter of policy language or net zero branding, becoming a test of operating discipline.
