Stripe is a provider of financial infrastructure which says it’ s on a mission“ to increase the GDP of the internet”.
With dual headquarters in San Francisco and Dublin, the company’ s software is used by startups and large enterprises alike to accept payments and manage their finances online. It was conceived by brothers and co-founders Patrick and John Collison – today CEO and President respectively – who have come a long way from their roots in rural Ireland to building this tech success story.
Patrick and John showed signs of promise from an early age, despite their disadvantages. The former was
taking computing courses at the University of Limerick aged just 8, before going on to win the 41st Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition award at 16 for his LISP-type programming language software, Croma.
The brothers’ first start-up was Shuppa, which they founded when Patrick was just 19 and John was 17. Selling Shuppa for US $ 5m in 2008, they went on to found Stripe in 2010 which had early investments from PayPal Co-founder Peter Thiel and even Elon Musk. Fast-forward to 2023, Stripe’ s latest valuation stood at US $ 50bn after a US $ 6.5bn Series I funding round in March 2023. Today, over 100 industry leaders process more than US $ 1bn a year on Stripe, with 135 currencies and payment methods supported.
